St Patrick’s Society celebrate 75th anniversary with biggest Feast day cake in the world
As part of this years Manchester Irish Festival celebrations the St Patrick’s Day Society have produced a five tier 15ft cake to mark their Patron Saint’s Feast Day.
The cake dwarfs New York’s famous three tier green, white and gold cake which is displayed on St Patrick’s Day at the world-famous Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York for their annual parade.
Lawrence Hennigan from Manchester’s Irish Festival website said “We already have the biggest St Patrick’s Day Parade in the UK and the third biggest festival in the world, just behind New York and Dublin, so it was great to see us beating the New Yorkers on St Patrick’s Day at something.”
The city's St Patrick's society commissioned the five-tier, 15ft cake to mark this year's celebrations of Ireland's patron saint and the 75th anniversary of the Manchester society which features a saint's gold mitre on top and images of Irish memorabilia around the five tiers.
The fruit cake, made by renowned Bury patissier Slattery's, has been unveiled in the lobby of the city centre Midland Hotel, where the society which is one of the oldest in Britain, was founded in 1935 and where they will celebrate their jubilee with a ball tomorrow, Wednesday, St Patrick's Day.
But don't try sinking you're teeth into the bottom three tiers which measure four metres square as they're fake!
