Levenshulme Goes for Gold by staging Olympic Torch Weekend

Levenshulme village in South Manchester is aiming for its own Gold Medal when it stages a whole weekend of Olympic themed events to celebrate the historic arrival of the Olympic torch.

The fun starts on Saturday 23 June when Manchester Markets and the Levenshulme traders association stage a special Olympic themed Street market with foods and crafts being sold from around the world (www.levymarket.com) . Local artists have arranged a series of children’s Olympic themed Art workshops and competitions (www.sams-art.co.uk) . Whilst Levenshulme’s - Inspire Centre will be staging a 24 hour sponsored bike ride ( www.lev-inspire.org.uk ). A huge light beacon will light up the Sky in the centre of the village to herald the arival of the torch which should be seen all around Greater Manchester.

On Saturday night, St Mary’s Parish Centre stage a special Olympic Torch celebration party to congratulate local Levenshulme resident – Brenda Harkin on being selected to carry the famous torch. The community celebration features live music from the award winning Joe Casserley from the Full Irish Radio show and his band ‘The Last Drop’. (www.thefullirish.net )

Then on Sunday 24th June, local Levenshulme traders (www.levenshulmetraders.co.uk ) are setting up a special breakfast BBQ on the village Green from 7am to get people ready for the arrival of the torch at 8am. At the same time, Levenshulme’s Inspire Centre are also hosting a special free breakfast for the first 100 people and announcing the winners of the Art Olympic competition.

Lawrence Hennigan the chairperson of the Levenshulme Traders said "It promises to be a fantastic weekend and one that everyone in the village will remember the historic occasion. It is another opportunity for local traders to show the rest of the world what a great place Levenshulme is."

The Olympic Torch is due to arrive at the Levenshulme Inspire Centre at about 7.45am and the village Green at about 8am.
