Ballina Go for Gold in Charity Spinathon

A team of over 100 volunteers and local celebrities such as Irish Rugby international - Gavin Duffy, World Champion Boxer-Ray Moylette and the internationally famous recording artist -Tommy Fleming, took part in an Olympic sized 24 hour Spinathon challenge to attempt ride to the London Olympics for the Mental Awareness charity 'Aware'.

The event on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 July, was one of the highlights of the Ballina Salmon Festival and its finish coincided with the start of the massive Fireworks display.

The Spinathon was organised by two local Ballina Business', the landmark pub An Sean Sibin, led by Aiden and Cathal Sweeney and the towns popular Personal Training Studio, Functional Fitness ran by David O'Mahoney and Paul Barrett. Together they managed to smash their original target by cycling a record breaking 1154 km, the equivalent of 722miles.

When asked about how the event went Aiden replied "We were overwhelmed by the support given to us by local people and Business in the area who sponsored us, it was great to our TDs Michelle Mulherin and Dara Calleary getting involved as well. We even persuaded the new Lady of the Moy - Kate Leonard to hop on at 4am. Aware's mission is to create a society where people with depression and their families are understood and supported, that they are free from stigma and have access to a broad range of appropriate therapies to enable them to reach their full potential. The main idea behind the event was to promote the work of the charity and to raise funds to support their work.'

Tony Hennigan from the Manchester Mayo Tourism group added "I thought it was a fantastic idea for a very worthy cause. They all deserve a Gold medal each. That distance would have taken the team to London and back to Ballina, with enough left over for a victory circuit of the town.'

The event when all the sponsorship comes in should raise something in the region of several thousand. With another fund raising raffle organised for August 4th in An Sean Sibin organisers are crossing their fingers on record breaking grand total.

The organisers would like to thank their sponsors Leonard Chauffeurs & Eddie Lundy Haulage, who donated .50cent per mile, Lionbridge Ballina €500 and the many other local business who gave generous raffle prizes and money on the day: Mocha Beans, Corrinne Beattie Photography, Falcon Fruits, Ice House, Broken Jug, Mery Monk, Maloneys Supervalu, Easons, Cube Securities, Paul Keegan Centre Enniscrone, JOe Corcoran, Charlie Doherty DayBreak, Sherry Fitzgerald, Murphys Gala, Gift - It, Bartra Bar, Love Lee's, Fred Queenan & Sons, Barrett Wholesale, Value Centre, Breathnachs, Emmets, Hollister, Ballina Printing, All Safe Signs, Micheal Carr & Daughters, Nippers, Merricks Paint, Durcan Insurance,Hopkins Bike Shop, Primary Solutions, Market Kitchen,Sis Sal, Oliver Rouse Jewellery's, O'Rourkes Barber Shop, Ballina Golf Club, Purity Beauty Salon, Kelly Photography, Niall Conlon.
