2011 Manchester Irish Festival sets new records
This years 2011 Manchester Irish Festival, has once again broken all previous records for attendance with sell out events all over the city. The annual event which is now in its sixteenth year staged over 200 events at over fifty different venues in an action packed sixteen day festival, making it the biggest Irish Festivals in Europe. It was launched in a civic reception at Manchester Town Hall by Irish international Shay Given on Friday 4th March and ran until Sunday 20 March. An estimated 250,000 visitors flooded the city flying in from all over the world to enjoy the two week festival.
Kevin Fitzpatrick the co-chair of the festival said “It has been a very hectic two weeks which has surpassed all our expectations. The media attention that the festival has received has been phenomenal, after being declared the undisputed champion of Europe. Our sights are set on maintaining our European crown next year and with the support of our sponsors and the Irish community, we are hoping to site our sites on being the world’s premier Irish festival. This years line up was fantastic with the likes of The Script, Westlife, Boyzone, Beady Eye and The Dubliners. You would be hard pressed to find any festival with such a high calibre of acts. As well as the high profile acts the festival has never forgotten its community roots, this years celebration was no exception with a full cultural and educational programme of events. The big advantage of the Manchester Irish Festival is that you could enjoy a free concert in your local Irish venue or go and spend £50 seeing a major international act. It had something to suit every budget and age group.”
“The work for next years festival now begins and we would love to hear from anyone who can help sponsor the event, or would like to get involved in putting on an event during the festival next year.”
“We must thank our main sponsors The Irish Post, Magners, Guinness and Manchester City Council. Without their support and all the advertisers in our brochure the festival would cease to exist.”
