Ballina inspired Festival attracts 5,000 to its outdoor Party in Levenshulme
An outdoor party in Levenshulme, Manchester, organized by Lawrence and Anthony Hennigan whose Irish roots stem from Attymass Parish in Mayo attracted a crowd of just over 5,000 on Thursday 30 October. The event was part of the Levenshulme Festival an annual event which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year and is now seen as one of Europe’s biggest community celebrations. Levenshulme is home to the biggest Irish community outside of London, the majority of whom come from Mayo in the West of Ireland. The two week event takes its inspiration from the Ballina Street Festival which the brothers religiously visit each summer in their home town.

Lawrence Hennigan the president of the festival said “It was great to see such a large crowd again at the event on such a cold evening, we even got a visit from a Ballina Radio production student ‘Michelle Melvin’ who had read about the festival in the ‘Western People’. She came along to record the event for her end of year assignment and we were only too happy to help her out. A lot of inspiration for the festival comes from our visits to the Ballina Street festival which we go to every year, we have a cottage in my dad's home village in Ballycong so its only five minutes in a car. The outdoor party combines the best bits of Ballina's Mardi Gras and their international evening along with a massive funfair on the same site which makes for a superb night out for all the family as long as they bring their wellies!”
The outdoor event was a joint production organized by Lawrence's Irish pub company ‘The Levenshulme Pub company’, along with Michael Moloney Irish Funfairs, plus Manchester City Council, the Parks department and staging was provided by the Full Irish Radio show. The groups pooled their resources to put on one of Manchester’s biggest and most family orientated free outdoor parties to celebrate the areas tenth anniversary festival.
Despite the cold weather and threat of rain a crowd of 5,000 turned up to enjoy the credit crunching event which featured a free fireworks display put on by one of the city’s premier fireworks display companies. Plus a host of free live entertainment which included dancing displays from the Banat Egyptian Dancing troupe, the Keegan Kennedy School of Irish Dancing as seen on Channel M TV, the Manchester School of Samba and ‘Syd Bozko’ the winners of Manchester Irish Festival YGG unsigned. The event was compered by Irish DJ James H who who kept the crowd warmed up with his selection of Irish classics. Free face painting was also provided for the kids as an extra treat.
The two week festival was launched on Friday 24th October and runs to Sunday 9 November. Up to 10,000 people are expected to enjoy one hundred and sixty events. Some five hundred performers will take part in its Music & Arts programme and Manchester City Council Sports development team will be running a special free childrens half term multi sports week during the first part of the festival.
Festival chairperson Tony Hennigan said “The outdoor party is always one of our highlights and last year it got national media coverage when it was featured on channel 4 TV. We have really pushed the boat out this year for our anniversary and despite the credit crunch everyone has pulled together to put on this free event.”
Other festival highlights still to come include the award winning ‘Full Irish Radio’ show who will be putting on a special live broadcast on Sunday 2 November.
Live Music plays a huge role in this years’ celebration with twenty six gigs featuring just over two hundred musicians taking place over the two weeks. With everything from Alt Country, Brazilian, Irish and Jazz music through to Acoustic festivals celebrating the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Oasis taking place. Highlights include appearances by the likes of Tom Hingley from the chart topping Madchester band ‘The Inspiral Carpets’ and international Irish Country and Western star ‘Kevin Prendegast’.
