‘Irish land and property records - their importance to all who seek their ancestors in Ireland
Helen Kelly, well-known Irish genealogist, will be available for individual consultations by appointment on 2nd ,3rd and 4th March at the Irish World Heritage Centre.
For a variety of reasons, there is a great scarcity of Irish census material for the 19th century. The only complete census returns at present available to the public, are those of 1901 and 1911.
This absence renders the land/property record known as ‘Griffith’s Primary Valuation’ an extremely useful genealogical source, particularly to members of the Irish Diaspora. Published between 1847-64 it essentially records tenants, as well as lessors of land/property in that time-frame. Therefore, this source is of immense value to those who wish to re-connect with their Irish roots.
Helen is passionate in her belief that Griffith’s and the subsequent survey records lead those of Irish ancestry on a wonderful journey of discovery and to a much deeper understanding of their heritage and homeland.
