Manchester Martyrs' Monument was erected in Moston Cemetery in November 1898 by local Catholics in honour of William Philip Allen, Michael Larkin, and Michael O'Brien, who were publicly hanged in 1867 for manslaughter and facilitating the escape of convicted Fenian leaders.

During the troubles of the 1970s and 80s, the monument was attacked and seriously damaged. The four "Maids of Erin", gracing each corner, were all badly mutilated. The figure of the Irish Wolfhound and the figure of Eireann, disappeared and acid & pitch was poured all over the monument, leaving it in a sorry state for many years.

In 2004 a group raised some money and successfully had the monument cleaned up. Now the Manchester Martyr’s Monument Restoration Fund wish to see this project , taken a step further with the full restoration of the monument to its former glory.

Work has already started but it will be a long and expensive project, which when completed will be a fitting memorial to Manchesters Irish Community past, present & future .
