Sunday 11th March Events

St Patrick’s Mass in Gaelic & English

Irish World Heritage Centre

Queens Rd, Cheetham Hill

Mass will be celebrated in both Gaelic and English in celebration of St Patrick. Father John Aherne (Parish Priest of Saint Mary’s and the Angels in Levenshulme) will be the celebrant.

Music for the mass will be provided by the home Comhaltas branch of the Irish World Heritage Centre, Saint Wilfrid’s . The children will also lead the offertory procession, bringing up gifts that include dancing shoes, a hurling stick and a bowl of shamrock.

This is a lovely way to start the parade day off, and helps to remind us all of the reason for these wonderful celebrations.

Tory Island Painters Exhibition

Tory island lies nine miles off the north-west coast of Donegal and is the most isolated of Ireland’s inhabited islands. It can be cut off from the mainland for weeks at a time since it is surrounded by some of the most treacherous waters of Ireland’s Atlantic coast.

English painter Derek Hill visited Tory island in 1956 to paint the island’s dramatic seascapes. While painting one day an islander, James Dixon, remarked that he could paint just as well. Dixon’s success with Hill’s encouragement culminated in a school of painters who were to exhibit their paintings in many cities throughout the world.

The success of the Tory painters is unique among any island community throughout the whole of Western Europe as only one of them had received any formal artistic training. The present school of painters comprises four islanders, Patsy-Dan Rodgers, Anton Meenan, Ruairi Rodgers and Michael Finbar Rodgers. Each artist has developed his own individual and easily recognisable style.
