Message from the Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern, T.D. on the occasion of the
2004 Manchester Irish Festival

It gives me great pleasure to send my best regards to everyone associated with the 2004 Manchester Irish Festival.

This is the ninth year of the Festival and it really has gone from strength to strength each year, now being the largest Irish festival in the United Kingdom and indeed one of the largest in the entire world.

I am delighted that this year I will have the opportunity to be part of the Festival when I attend the Festival Parade on Sunday, 14th March. While this is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the whole Festival, a huge variety of events will take place from the 6th to the 17th of March.

The ongoing scale and success of the Festival bears testament to the tireless efforts of the Irish Community in Manchester. I look forward to being part of it this year.

Well done to all concerned and enjoy.

Message from
Cllr Pat Karney, Life President

It is my great privilege to invite you to our ninth Manchester Irish Festival – still the largest in the country.

Ester, John and the team have put together a fantastic event for 2004 which will break all records.

I am very proud of the contribution that our Irish Community has made to civic and community life across Greater Manchester. Our Festival is the grand occasion for all the public to join us in celebrating all things Irish. A big thank you to all the fantastic volunteers who have put the Festival together and a big thank you to you for your continued support.

See you all at the Festival and a happy St Patrick’s Day.

Cllr Pat Karney

Manchester Irish Festival Committee would like to record their tribute to Tony Cross, who died in January 2004.

Tony was an active supporter of the Irish Festival from its creation and provided practical help and support to each Festival over many years. Tony’s input was as diverse as producing the festival brochure, planning and staging events in the Town Hall, sorting out photographers, publicity and press coverage and helping with the Festival market. He also led on some of the high-profile visits such as those of President Mary Robinson and John Hulme, of which we were all so proud.

As in all other areas of his activities, Tony gave his enthusiasm and hard work with a generous and happy spirit.

The Irish Festival Committee is proud to markTony Cross’ contribution to successive Festivals and his contribution to its growth and status today. All will sadly miss him.
