Levenshulme in TV Spotlight again

After enjoying national fame by being featured on the BBC's 'Changing Rooms' and 'Clocking Off', Levenshulme in South Manchester welcomed film crews from Granada TV.

Levenshulme Village, which is home to the biggest Irish Community outside of London, is being turned into the 'Guinness Quarter' of Manchester for the duration of the festival. Giant welcoming banners have been erected throughout the village.

Alan Keegan of BBC GMR is interviewedGranada are producing a six part documentary about the Irish in the Northwest and as Levenshulme is home to the biggest Irish community outside of London and one of the main areas for the Manchester Irish Festival, they wanted to feature the bustling village in the series.

They started filming on Monday 11th March by filming the numerous Irish venues dotted along Stockport Road. They also popped into the packed Manchester Irish Festival BBC GMR live outside broadcast by 'The Parlour' at the Packhorse Pub on Stockport Road in the centre of the village.

Mustang - Live in the Pack HorseThe broadcast started at 7pm and featured world champion accordion players Adele Farrell & Trish O'Grady plus All Britain Fiddle player Emma Sweeney from Levenshulme. Irish Country Band 'Mustang' kept the capacity crowd entertained all night. Up and coming Indie Band 'Karigma' played an acoustic number which earned them a rapturous reception.

On the following Monday the 18 March the cameras return to Levenshulme to film the legendary Manchester Schools Unite 11-17 club night at the Palace Nightclub. This is the closing event for this years Manchester Irish Festival and will feature a 'Pop Pupils' competition where students from across the city will be singing hits from Westlife to Samantha Mumba.

attracting all this media attention, the village is currently undergoing a
massive £9 million regeneration programme by the A6 SRB partnership and
these programmes are helping us to advertise the village's many assets."
